Lottie Whalen is a writer and researcher, based in Glasgow, UK. After completing a PhD on the modernist poet and artist Mina Loy at Queen Mary University of London, she published her first book – Radicals and Rogues: the Women Who Made New York Modern – with Reaktion in October 2023 (and in US December 2023 via University of Chicago Press). She also co-runs the interdisciplinary arts project Decorating Dissidence, and works in heritage.  She is currently working on her next book Women Make Cities: Creative Experiments in Urban Life and researching a biography of American textile artist Marguerite Zorach. 

Radical and Rogues is a brilliantly entertaining and enlightening study of New York in the early 20th century, a time when a diverse group of female artists, poets and patrons joyfully dismantled the limits society had set them – and created something new and wondrous in the process.
